Outline for Level 1 Wound Care Course
Level 1 wound care teaches the use of the Wound Bed Paradigm to:
Identify risk factors for pressure injuries and to implement prevention strategies
Assess & treat wounds with & without clinical signs & symptoms of infection specifically:
• Partial thickness wounds
• Skin tears
• Stage 1 & 2 pressure injuries
Differentiate between wounds commonly seen in practice such as venous and arterial leg ulcers, diabetic foot ulcers
Report Stage 3, 4 & Unstageable pressure injuries as critical incidents
The WRHA wound care policy states that:
Health Care Professionals who have completed Level 1 wound care education or equivalent education provided by hiring facility shall:
• Initiate wound prevention strategies
• Initiate treatment for wounds with and without clinical signs and symptoms of infection including partial thickness wounds, skin tears, stage 1 and 2 pressure injuries
